Touchy Subject hails from one of the most musically (and culturally) innovative spots in the world. Hackney has become known for breaking unseen boundaries and mixing styles, fashions, music and people in an all welcoming, anything accepted zone. So there is some understanding of why Phonetic Fanatic by Touchy Subject out on Medallion Sounds is full of bright, vibrant, chopped and delicate pieces which push fat basslines along with stepping drum patterns.
Touchy Subject clearly has a knack for the art of creation, and I believe this spans into the visual world as well as the aural.
I have selected The All Clear as my track of the week. It is a track that effortlessly progresses with so many standout highlights. The synthetic chords accompany the cut and dropped vocals perfectly, whilst the ambience builds behind the consistent drums. Further highlights are the electronic stabs which ease your fixation to the ever increasing rolling warbling bass. Adding a few horn blasts, this track is one of the best I’ve heard this year and I urge you to have a listed to the whole LP.
Phonetic Fanatic holds quite a few other gems. I very much savoured Baker and Hold Me featuring Dan Dansk whilst others have picked out Higgs as their standout piece. Only proving that there is plenty in there for the connoisseur.
